From September 10 to 12, 2025, the Moise Palace on the island of Cres hosted the second international scientific workshop “Koopman Operator Theory: Fundamentals, Approximations and Applications.” The workshop is sponsored by the University of Rijeka, the Faculty of Engineering, and Moise Palace. It was organized by Igor Mezić and Ervin Kamenar, while our team members William Redman, Tomislav Bazina, David Liović, and Marko Kozlov also presented their work. The scientific committee includes Prof. Zlatko Drmač (Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb), Prof. Yoshi Susuki (Kyoto University, Japan), and Prof. Alexandre Mauroy (University of Namur, Belgium). Those who were unable to attend in person were able to follow the workshop remotely via Zoom.
The workshop is dedicated to methods in machine learning and artificial intelligence, with a focus on Koopman operator theory. We discussed the latest theoretical discoveries and the application of Koopman operator theory, with a special emphasis on uses in robotics, climate science, biology, healthcare, and artificial intelligence.
The workshop has extended it’s global reach and hosted around 30 scientists from the world’s most prestigious institutions from all parts of the world this year including:
- USA: UC Santa Barbara, California Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins University, University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Dartmouth College, University of Maryland,
- Italy: University of Bologna
- Croatia: University of Zagreb (Faculty of Science), University of Rijeka, Faculty of Engineering
- Belgium: University of Namur
- Japan: Kyoto University, Institute of Science Tokyo
- Germany: Technical University of Munich, Ilmenau University of Technology
- United Kingdom: University of Leicester
- Scotland: Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh
- Australia: University of Sydney
- Netherlands: Eindhoven University of Technology
During the three-day program, participants had the opportunity to attend lectures and discussions focused on interdisciplinary collaboration and the definition of guidelines for future research. One particularly memorable initiative was a special session with younger researchers, who actively asked questions and, from their own perspective and experience with research challenges, proposed directions for the future development of the field and suggested promising types of project applications to further advance it. This discussion took place at sea, on a boat anchored in a beautiful cove near Valun, a small town on the island of Cres, creating a unique and inspiring atmosphere that gave the session a truly special character.
The third edition of the conference “Koopman Operator Theory: Fundamentals, Approximations, and Applications” is planned for next year in Kyoto, Japan.
